The things you learn from badges - Joseph cohen
I have learnt so much since writing my Australian Badge Guides Books way back in 2012. & not just about the badges themselves, but the history - social, military, and cultural.
For e.g. did you know that the Australian badge maker - J. Cohen & Son - who manufactured the Lismore High School badge - came to Lismore circa 1895, having worked in the jewellery trade for Mr F. Wicks (Watchmakers, Jewellers, and Opticians), also in Molesworth Street, Lismore. Joseph Cohen initially worked as a travelling salesman for Wicks, and he married Margaret Currie in Lismore in 1896. He became a naturalised citizen of Australia in 1898. Joseph left Lismore for Mosman in 1935, and his son, Henry, continued the Lismore business. Anyway, Joseph immigrated to Australia from Poland (with his sister, Rose) fleeing religious persecution resulting from laws first enacted by the Russian Czarina, Catherine the Great. Fascinating.
