The "ACF" or Australian Comforts Fund was originally formed on 24 August 1916 to raise money for comfort items to be sent to the Australian troops fighting for the British Empire in World War One. The ACF did astonishing work and was mainly organised and run by women on a voluntary-basis.
The ACF was formed from a number of Australian State-based patriotic organisations that had been individually formed at the beginning of the Great War. With the cessation of hostilities, the ACF officially ceased its fundraising operations on 16 April 1920, only to be reformed with the outbreak of the Second World War.
